The neo-prohibition petition is officially certified. The Press-Citizen has a weak article; with the headline Council sounds off on 21-only, I expected a nice comprehensive straw vote. Instead I found this classic sentence:
Mayor Ross Wilburn and councilors Regenia Bailey, Connie Champion, Dee Vanderhoef and Amy Correia could not be reached for comment.
Five out of seven unavailable? We'll give the PC an incomplete for the day.
The Gazette is actually running a front page poll on "What do you think should be the legal drinking age?" At this writing it's neck and neck between 18 and 21. A European "lower than 18" is not an option, and 7% of respondents are actually voting for full-out prohibition ("I'm opposed to legalized drinking").
On the blogs, Nick Johnson and State 29 both offer loud opinions on the subject. State:
Republicans want to put Ronald Reagan up on a big high horse about the 1980s and conservatism, but Reagan (the son of a terrible alcoholic) and nanny-stater Elizabeth Dole brought on the stupid law that tied Federal highway dollars to a state's drinking age.
