UIowa Dorms Open? Never Mind.

UIowa Dorms Open for Caucuses? Uhhhh, Never Mind.

A brief flurry of hope that the University of Iowa would reverse its policy and open the dorms for caucus night was dashed on Wednesday night.

In a 5:30 p.m. email to the group's 1,000 member list, University Democrats chair Atul Nakhasi reported that the University had decided to join Iowa State and Northern Iowa and allow students to return to their residence halls Jan. 3, as long as they notified their residence assistants before leaving for Christmas break, which starts Friday.

But just before 9 p.m., Nakhasi issued a retraction. "University Housing had unintentionally informed the organization inaccurately earlier today that they would be open to students who told their RAs beforehand," Nakhasi wrote. "A few hours later tonight, the Director of Housing was prompt to correct that."

In the initial email, Nakhasi addressed the question of whether students whose parents live out of state should caucus. "The law in Iowa is crystal clear: students who attend school in the state are entitled to register to vote in the state as long they are not registered anywhere else," he wrote. "There should be no controversy."
