While Leach didn't defend the administration, he sided with his party in many instances, including a continued, though shortened occupation of Iraq. 'If democracy is the reason for entering (Iraq),' he said, 'Democracy should be the reason for leaving.'
The forum turned its focus to state issues, including Leach's vote in favor of legislation banning taking a minor across state lines to get an abortion.

This war was supported by a majority by both political parties,'' Leach said after Loebsack criticized Bush's handling of the war and foreign policy issues. ``It is quite possible, sometimes, majorities are wrong. Loebsack said he favored raising the minimum wage devoid of any estate tax-related caveats, universal single-payer health care, and federally funded abortion...

'America's image won't change until we elect Congressmen who will hold Bush accountable,' Loebsack said. 'We need to hold the Bush administration accountable, and we need to have alternative voices in Congress.
'As long as there's one party in control, there's not going to be accountability,' Loebsack said.
