Feel free to scoop me today
Gonna be off the grid a few hours here helping a friend move, so any big breaking stuff will be late today.
Couldn't figure out which bills got funneled in and what got funneled out. Legislative candidate filing is likely to be slow today with the incumbents all back home.
You may see a little live blogging from the Johnson County Dems convention tomorrow, depending on how busy Credentials keeps me.

Street Legal Jet Powered VW Beetle
Street Legal Jet Powered VW Beetle
No slug bug back:

I can't tell if this is photoshopped or not.
No slug bug back:
What can you do with a GE Model T58-8F helicopter turboshaft engine, converted to jet? With Ron Patrick’s custom VW Beetle you can have lots and lots of dangerous fun exploiting all 1350 horsepower. This monster is powered by two engines (original up front, jet in back) and is perfectly street legal since you’re only using the gasoline powered engine in normal driving conditions. But if you’re feeling adventurous, fire up the jet engine - which spins up to 26,000 rpm/13,000 rpm idle - and watch the afterburner come to life...
I can't tell if this is photoshopped or not.
Cronkite: Telling the Truth About the War on Drugs
Cronkite: Telling the Truth About the War on Drugs
That old hippie, Walter Cronkite:
That old hippie, Walter Cronkite:
Amid the clichés of the drug war, our country has lost sight of the scientific facts. Amid the frantic rhetoric of our leaders, we've become blind to reality: The war on drugs, as it is currently fought, is too expensive, and too inhumane.
But nothing will change until someone has the courage to stand up and say what so many politicians privately know: The war on drugs has failed...

One More Thing I Don't Care For About Mike Blouin
This is a completely gratuitous Blouin bash, but I'm below my daily quota. You notice how much this logo

looks like the logo of another candidate I didn't care for?

Unwelcome Departures
Unwelcome Departures
Two sad departures today:
Patriot Skullface has shut down. He doesn't share all the details, but the implication is someone made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
The dialogue of the blogosphere needs to be more than the bland repetition of talking points. But unfortunately party leadership is behaving as if they want to stifle, not encourage, healthy dissent. It seems like there's a group that's interested in what's being said not in order to listen, but rather to silence. And it's that kind of namby-pambyism that makes people say "the Democrats don't STAND for anything."
Any old-timers remember the 1994 platform?
We had the nerve to put gay marriage in the platform (in 1994!). Bonnie Campbell was so worried about getting a bad Yepsen column that she stabbed the activist base in the back and renounced - not just ignored offhandedly, which is normal, but went out of her way to formally renounce - the platform. The next state convention, the entire platform process was scuttled and we were limited to bullet point "priority statements" with about as much oomph as "baseball is good."
That's the mindset at work here. That play it safe mentality costs us elections.
The loss of Patriot Skullface makes our nascent Iowa progressive blogosphere, and our state, poorer. Charlie, hope you saved your files. I know your decision is personal, but please reconsider. Loved your site ever since I saw the Hunter Thompson skull logo.
Democrat Steve Miller is dropping his bid for House District 89. Steve had a lot to offer this district (chunks of Johnson and Jefferson but mostly Washington County). Fortunately we still have Mark Nolte to carry the ball in this Republican held seat.
I ran for the Legislature ten years ago and it's a HUGE time and energy commitment. Don't know if I could do it now... and my hat's off to anyone who even seriously thinks about it.
